Polyart® synthetic paper consists of a high density polyethylene (HDPE) film coated with a unique clay coating that ensures print quality that's vivid and colourful.

Combining the advantages of paper with the durability of plastic, Polyart synthetic paper looks, feels, prints and converts like a premium matt-coated paper but stands up to water, weather, grease, chemicals and resists tearing in both directions. 

Polyart’s state-of-the-art synthetic paper comprise a complete range of films designed to withstand the most demanding applications.

Manufacturing process

Polyart synthetic paper has a unique, patented manufacturing process consisting in biaxially stretching combined with paper-like coating.

Polyart synthetic paper includes a large variety of properties: water resistant, tear resistant, outdoor use, top quality printing, environment friendly, to name a few.

Technical benefits

The uniqueness of Polyart synthetic paper makes it particularly suited when very specific technical benefits are required, such as:

  • Resistant to tearing and water, Polyart is an ideal substrate for outdoor applications. Plus, because Polyart is resistant to seawater, it is perfect for drum labels, shipping labels, etc.
  • Resistant to oily substances and most chemical products (i.e. ammonia, caustic soda, isopropyl alcohol).
  • Smudge proof Thermal Transfer print, absorbent and resistant coating in wet environment.
  • Due to its special manufacturing process, Polyart has no grain direction, which means it conforms easily to bottle shapes
  • Can withstand extreme heat and cold, remaining dimensionally stable up to +60° C / +140° F and down to -60° C / -76° F.
  • Due to its good UV resistance and weathering characteristics, Polyart will not shrink or become brittle.
  • Complies with specifications for toy regulations.
  • Can be Gamma irradiated for medical sterilization processing.  After being sterilized, it is microbially clean.

Polyart® adapts quickly to most printing processes, such as flexography, lithography, gravure, rotary letterpress, screen, as well as variable information systems such as thermal transfer, ion deposition, dot matrix, ink jet, etc.


Polyart's clay coating is responsible for its ability to readily accept color - and show it off beautifully.  
Polyart ensures rich, vivid images with excellent ink holdout without requiring special preparation.

Printing Tips

Offset Printing

Inks

  • Use litho inks (which have low mineral oil content) and control ink/water balance.  You'll get the same printing result with minimum damping and less ink film.
  • With lighter basis weights, use special inks with very low mineral oil content that are allowed to dry entirely by oxidation.
  • For best results, consult with your ink suppliers.
  • For both heavier and lighter basis weights, print on the dry side while maintaining good ink/water balance.
  • Ink tacks should be in 16 tack or below.
  • Multi-color work is best achieved when printed in a single pass on a multi-color press.

Proofing

  • Where possible, practice undercolor removal in wet-on-wet printing (to keep film weight down).
  • Use minimum ink weight in solid area

Drying

  • Ink is usually run straight from the can.
  • In some instances, may need to include small amount of non-mineral oil reducer. (Consult ink manufacturer in these cases.)
  • Successful results can be achieved using UV drying techniques with appropriate UV inks, as well as electron beam and infrared drying techniques.
  • Oven temperature should not exceed 74°C / 165°F. (Maximum web temperature 38°C / 100°F)

Stacking

Heights of approximately 500 sheets (5 inches / 13cm or less) are recommended.

Feeding

Polyart will feed just like a matte-coated paper on all types of feeders. Ensure that sheets are aired (fanned) prior to printing.

Anti-Offset Spray Powder

Should be used during printing by litho and letterpress. 
With heavy four-color process and/or solid background work, use non-vanishing, starch-based offset sprays of small particle size (20 microns and above ? .5 to 1 mil).

Humidity

Keep pressroom humidity levels at 45-60%.

Small Offset Machines

  • Keep the proposed end-use in mind when selecting inks. (For example, light-fast inks must be specified for prints to be exposed to sunlight.) 
  • Synthetic oxidizing inks are recommended.

Litho & Letterpress

For best results, use screen sizes of up to 175 screen.

Polyart Digital on HP Indigo digital presses

Polyart is available in a range of HP Indigo certified substrates qualified for use with both sheet and web output devices. Ensure that the sheets have been aired and fanned before loading into the feeder. As with all synthetic papers and films, it maybe necessary to carry out one or more null cycles, as well as blanket shift separations for correct CPR control to obtain optimum print register.

Superb versatility offers limitless possibilities. No matter what converting method you have in mind, Polyart® is ready to go to work for you. It can easily be scored, folded, perforated, varnished, foil blocked, stitched and more, using standard converting equipment.

Finishing

All internal corners should be radiused, since a sharp notch will greatly reduce the initial tear resistance of the material. The cutting tools must be kept sharp to produce a clean cut.

Guillotining

Blades should be kept sharp, and because of the compressibility of the material, light clamping pressures should be used.

Die-Cutting

We recommend the use of hard steel rules.
All internal corners should be radiused (a sharp notch greatly reduces tear resistance). Where a retention point is required, we recommend this should be kept as small as possible to prevent risk of initiating tearing.

Perforating

Can be sprocket-punched or perforated.
Keep hole punches sharp and clean. Perforation slots should be long, with very short ties.
Always test perforations and make sure perforation is running off the sheet, so tearing is initiated more easily.

Drilling, Punching & Cornering

Keep cutting tools sharp and clean.

During drilling and cornering, it is important that a short dwell time is used in order to eliminate heat generation, which may cause fusion of the edges of the sheets.
For cornering perforation slots should be long, with very short ties.

Folding

Polyart can be folded on normal sheet-folding machines.
Scoring is not necessary for a 16-page signature using 75 gsm (51 lb.) or 90 gsm (61 lb.) weights. Scoring is recommended on heavier weights.

Foil-stamping

Gives good results if heat is kept to a minimum

Stitching

Polyart will stitch easily, even when saddle-stitched and section-sewn

Gluing

For best results, use hot-melt systems (some solvent- and water-based adhesives work well, too)

Polyart follows the 4 R’s for environmental stewardship: Recycle, Reuse, Respect and Reduce

Recycle & Reuse

Polyart is made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and is therefore 100% recyclable in category 2 HDPE. We constantly strive to eliminate the waste generated by our production processes throughout the entire production chain:

• Waste linked to the production of Polyart synthetic paper

- Polyart production waste is regranulated and recycled in our production processes.
- Production scrap that cannot be reused in the production process is collected by a recycling company to be reprocessed as raw materials for other plastic items.

• Waste produced by printing processes

Polyart scrap resulting from printing processes are collected with other polymer products and reused to make other plastic items.

• Minimizing End-User Waste

When applied to compatible containers, Polyart labels are recycled together with the containers, eliminating the need for separation. This is why Polyart is widely used all over the world in labeling technologies such as in mold labeling.
 

Respect

Keeping our environmental impact as low as possible in our manufacturing processes is a key part of our corporate environmental strategy.
  • All Arjobex production sites comply with ISO 14001 environmental standards.
  • We have our own water treatment plants to handle the water used in our processes. Our waste water is therefore already clean when it leaves our production sites.
  • Our manufacturing process does not use ozone-depleting substances such as CFCs.

  • Polyart components are fully compliant with the following legislation dealing with heavy metals:

    • Part 3 of the 10988 European EN71 standard stipulating upper limits for toys and film coatings.
    • The requirements set out in the EC directive 94/62/EC relating to packaging waste.
  • Polyart does not contain phthalate.
  • Polyart does not contain chlorine or other halogens.
  • When incinerated under the right conditions, Polyart is non-toxic and does not produce dioxins or other highly toxic materials.

 

Reduce

Conserving Our Natural Resources and Sustainability
Polyart’s unique characteristics also contribute to resource conservation and sustainability.
  • Polyart has no impact on forest resources.
  • The Polyart manufacturing process uses five times less water that traditional paper production, thus preserving water resources.

Polyart® a range of synthetic papers for the most demanding labels

The synthetic paper Polyart thanks to its unique manufacturing process:  a polyethylene expanded film with a paper coating, combines the advantages of paper and the resistance of plastic.

Therefore Polyart is ideal for even the most demanding tag and label applications.

What are its characteristics?

A:
Very durable, almost completely tear-proof, resistant to most oils and chemicals, very water-resistant and very easy to print by all processes. 
   

Q:

Which printing processes are most suitable for Polyart?

A:
Polyart can be printed by conventional processes such as flexo, litho, offset UV, gravure, rotary letterpress, screen, as well as variable information systems such as thermal transfer, ion deposition, dot matrix and digital such as UV inkjet.
For digital printing you must use the specific products of the Polyart range: Polyart for HP Indigo, Polyart water-based inkjet and Polyart Laser.
 
   

Q:

Is Polyart printable by inkjet?

A:
Polyart can be printed on UV inkjet, for the other technologies (aqueous, solvent, eco solvent) Polyart requires a specific treatment.
   

Q:

Will Polyart run on my copier?

A:
Probably not. Most copiers' fuser rolls are too hot. When Polyart gets too hot, it will shrink. (However, Xerox does have a new low-temperature copier that will probably work.)

Will Polyart run on my laser printer?

Why is Polyart clay-coated?

A:
Clay coating eliminates the two biggest problems of plastic sheets: static and slow drying. Polyart has no static and provides a smooth, uniform surface that speeds drying.

How long does Polyart take to dry?

A:
Polyart dries much faster than most plastics. To make completely certain it has hard-dried, you should let it dry overnight.

What precautions do I need to take when using Polyart outdoors?

A:
None. Polyart contains no artificial whiteners or brighteners, which cause other plastics to become brittle and break in the sun. Polyart holds up very well outdoors in sunlight but we recommend the use of lightfast inks.
   

Q:

Does Polyart come in a pressure-sensitive grade?

A:
Yes. Many of our customers convert Polyart into pressure-sensitive products. If you're interested, contact us and we'll suggest some pressure-sensitive converters to you.

Um processo de fabricação exclusivo para um papel sintético excepcional: Polyart é um filme de polietileno de alta densidade com uma camada de papel. O papel sintético Polyart combina a resistência de um filme técnico com a qualidade de impressão de um papel cuché de alto nível.

O papel sintético Polyart pode ser usado nas condições mais difíceis. Resiste a rasgões, manipulação contínua e repetida, água, gorduras e muitas substâncias químicas.

Adequado para a maioria de técnicas de impressão (offset tradicional, offset UV, flexografia, tipografia, transferência térmica, etc.) Se imprime em Polyart como papel cuché. Não há nenhuma restrição em sua manipulação por máquinas: dobra-se, corta-se e perfura-se facilmente em equipamento padrão.

  • Uma variedade completa de papel :

    • Papel cuché ou não,
    • De 50g a 285g (60µm a 350µm),
    • Disponível em folhas ou em rolos
  • Para uma enorme série de aplicações :

Polyart®. Una gamma di carte sintetiche create per la stampa commerciale e per etichette tecniche che richiedono un’elevata qualità di stampa oltre che una buona durevolezza.

Un processo produttivo unico, per realizzare una carta sintetica eccezionale. Polyart è una film in polietilene ad alta densità a cui viene applicata una vera e propria patinatura. La carta sintetica Polyart combina la resistenza di un film tecnico con la qualità di stampa di una carta patinata di alta gamma.

La carta sintetica Polyart può essere utilizzata nelle condizioni più ardue. Resistente a strappi, manipolazioni continue, acqua, olio e molte sostanze chimiche.

Adatta per la maggior parte delle tecniche di stampa (offset tradizionale, offset UV, flessografia, tipografia, trasferimento termico, ecc), Polyart si stampa come carta patinata. Non vi sono limitazioni per quanto riguarda la macchinabilità: si piega, si taglia e si perfora facilmente con una strumentazione standard.

  • Una gamma di film completa :

    • Film patinato o meno,
    • Da 50g a 285g (da 60µm a 350µm),
    • Disponibile anche in fogli e bobine.
  • Per una vasta gamma di applicazioni :

    • IStampa commerciale: cartine, menu, poster, manuali, PLC, documenti ad uso esterno, ecc.

Eine einzigartige Technologie für ein außergewöhnliches synthetisches Papier. Polyart ist eine biaxial gereckte Polyethylenfolie, beidseitig matt weiss gestrichen, die die Widerstandsfähigkeit einer hochleistungsfähigen Folie und die Druckqualität eines gestrichenen Papieres vereinigt.

Polyart ist ein strapazierfähiges Produkt; sehr haltbar unter widrigen Bedingungen oder bei starker mechanischer Beanspruchung.

Polyart ist reißfest, wasserundurchlässig, fettabstobend und chemikalienbeständig.

Einfach zu bedrucken und zu verarbeiten : Polyart lässt sich perfekt im Offset-,Buch-, Flexo-, Tief-, Sieb- und Thermo-Transferdruck bedrucken (brillante Farbwidergabe von Bildern und Barcodes), hat keine Laufrichtung, und ist einfach zu verarbeiten (falzen, schneiden und perforieren).
